Dark arrow books
Always an avid reader, I started out reading books like Sweet Valley High, The Babysitter’s Club, and Nancy Drew. These books gave me hours of fascinating reading. Unfortunately, for my father, it meant working overtime to support my hundred dollar a week book habit. Then in the sixth grade, a teacher gave me The Lord of the Rings trilogy. At first, I wasn’t going to read it. But a case of the flu left me with nothing to do, but lie on my sofa. Bored and needing something to do, I started reading. Instantly, I fell in love with the world and the grand adventure that I found within those pages. I devoured the series in just three days, beginning my love of science fiction and fantasy.
Returning the books, I thanked my teacher for introducing me to the world of hobbits and elves. But I had more to thank her for than just introducing me to a genre with infinite worlds of wonder, strange characters, and ideas that I’d never have dreamed on my own. This same teacher encouraged me to write.
For that, I’ll always be grateful.
Because while I’ve enjoyed reading about these fascinating people with their fascinating lives, I’ve found that I missed having main characters who represented me as a black female. That longing to see myself represented, along with a desire to put the fascinating characters that are hiding out in my brain, are the reasons that I seriously started down the path of becoming a writer. Knowing that I’m not alone in my quest to publish my work, I’ve started this site, hoping to find others who want to share their journey on this hard road.
So, I invite anyone with the dream of becoming a published author to stop in and chat. To recommend writing resources. To network with those offering editing or graphic art skills. Or just to share a laugh at how life can make even the most mundane moments into a riot.
If you're interested in more than the blog, check out my Dark Arrow Books page. There you'll be able to read an excerpt from a book that I'm working on. If you read it, please take the time to complete the survey that follows. I'm looking for some good beta readers, and would love to get more feedback.
